Personal Environmental Monitors (PEMs)
The Personal Environmental Monitor Model 200 (PEM) is a small, lightweight, personal sampling device for collecting airborne particles in the PM2.5 or PM10 size ranges at 2, 4 or 10 lpm sampling flow rates.
The PEM is a single-stage impactor followed by a filter to collect aerosol particles for mass or chemical analysis. Aerosol is sampled through the impactor to remove coarse particles larger than the impactor cut-point. D50 diameters of 2.5 and 10 µm are available for personal PM2.5 or PM10 sampling. Sampling flow rates of 2, 4 or 10 L/min can be specified. The samplers are color-coded with each color signifying a specific cut-point and flow rate combination.
The Personal Environmental Monitor (PEM) is designed to be worn on the operator's lapel. Small, light and unobtrusive, it measures 2.3" x 2.5" x 0.9" (60 x 65 x 22 mm) and weighs 1.7 ounces (48 grams). The appropriate flow rate is provided by a small personal sampling pump secured to the operator's belt and connected to the PEM by means of a flexible tube.
The sample air enters the PEM through a multi-nozzle single-stage impactor which removes any particles above 2.5 or 10 microns, dependent on model. Particles smaller than the cut size are collected on a 37 mm filter which can then be removed and analyzed for potential health hazards. The filter can be analyzed gravimetrically for particle mass and chemically for specific chemical compounds.
The original PEMs was developed to assess the exposure to PM hazard in the individual. The PEM is equally well suited to indoor / outdoor air pollution and air quality studies as well as industrial health and safety applications.
